The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law on July 26, 1990, by President George H. W. Bush.
It is one of the most significant pieces of civil rights legislation in U.S. history, prohibiting discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life — including employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications, and access to state and local government programs.
Memorize ADA’s year and scope in context with other major civil rights laws:
1964: Civil Rights Act
1968: Fair Housing Act
1973: Rehabilitation Act (Section 504 — federal facilities)
1990: Americans with Disabilities Act (broad civil rights protections)
