Main Mode is used when both VPN peers have static public IP addresses.
Aggressive Mode is used when one of the peers (typically a branch or remote site) has a dynamic public IP address, since identity protection is less critical and the peer cannot be pre-identified by IP.
Therefore:
HQ-Gateway (static IP) → Main Mode
Subsidiary-Gateway (dynamic IP) → Aggressive Mode
Aggressive Mode
Uses 3 messages (faster, but less secure).
Peer identity is sent unencrypted, so it can be sniffed.
Used in situations where one peer has a dynamic IP or configuration must be quick.
