Question #: 16
Topic #: 3
[All RCDD-001 Questions]

You are extending 1000 MHz video service from your existing headend to a new equipment room (ER). Your existing incoming video signal is plus (+) 15 dBmV.
You have three two-way splitters with a total of minus (-) 15 dB. You are adding 122 m (400 ft) of series 11 (RG 11) cable with a minus (-) 18 dB with eight single end F-connectors with a total of minus (-) 1.2 dB. From the selections below, what is the MINIMUM gain amplifier required in the headend room?

  • A. Plus (+) 15 dB
  • B. Plus (+) 20 dB
  • C. Plus (+) 25 dB
  • D. Plus (+) 30 dB
  • E. Plus (+) 35 dB

Selected Answer: B
To calculate the minimum gain amplifier required, let's break down the signal loss: 1. Splitter loss: -15 dB 2. Cable loss: -18 dB (for 122m of Series 11 cable) 3. Connector loss: -1.2 dB (for 8 single-end F-connectors) Total signal loss: -15 dB - 18 dB - 1.2 dB = -34.2 dB Initial signal strength: +15 dBmV Signal strength after loss: +15 dBmV - 34.2 dB = -19.2 dBmV To determine the minimum gain required, we need to bring the signal strength back up to a usable level. Assuming a minimum signal strength of 0 dBmV (a common target), the amplifier gain should be: Gain required: 19.2 dB (to bring -19.2 dBmV up to 0 dBmV) To be safe, you might want to add a bit of headroom to the calculation. However, based on the calculation above, the minimum gain amplifier required would be approximately 20 dB.

Can some one help with this one? My approach was: dB Gain needed = (+)15 dBmV + (-)15 dB + (-)18 dB + (-)1.2 dB =19.2 db

its A because thats the minimum gain amplifier needed to bring that up to standard.
