From DMBoK
Accountability / Stewardship:
Metrics should be understood and approved by key stakeholders (e.g.,
business owners and Data Stewards). They are
notified when the measurement for the metric shows
that the quality does not meet expectations. The
business data owner is accountable, while a data
steward takes appropriate corrective action.
Because in DMBOK2, “Data Owners” are:
The senior authority over a domain of data.
Ultimately accountable for data usage, security, and quality.
Responsible for authorizing access and making strategic decisions about data.
Meanwhile:
Business Data Stewards are operationally accountable and manage data on behalf of the owner.
They ensure policies are followed but do not always have the decision-making power that Data Owners have.
On page 77 of DMBok2, "Business Data Stewards are business professionals, most often recognized subject matter experts, accountable for a subset of data. They work with stakeholders to define and control data."
